SMBETEOS pronounced sim-bee-toes, stands for Small/Medium Business End to End Open Source. It is our vision of how small and medium businesses can use the financial and competitive advantages of Open Source Solutions. We have selected and implemented Open Source solutions for our own use and our customers' use.

This site is dedicated to helping our customer's businesses reduce time and money by using Open Source solutions through out their business.

Our Selection Criteria (much less formal than some), besides functionality, are:

First: Offerings should be able to be installed and maintained by mere mortals (with some help).

Second: Offerings must not require a dedicated staff.

Third: Low start up cost

• Simple, Easy to Use and Understand
• We could provide phone support if necessary

SMBETEOS from a Technical Perspective:

• Open Source, you own the Source Code
• Customizable and relatively easy to integrate if required
• Low to No Cost, enterprise functionality is OK as long as it is a light weight implementation or can be handled by the existing personnel
• Small Footprint, can run on an old PC

Below are the key Open Source Solutions we are currently installing for ourselves and our Customers:

• Intrusion Detection with Snort, an application that monitors your network for unwanted visitors. We are currently installing Snort in our infrastructure and our customers and should have a standardized configuration soon.
• Backup and Recovery with Bacula, it can back up files and systems across your network to a Network Attached Storage device, to tape, or DC/DVD.
• Firewall and Router with Vyatta, an Open Source firewall solution that gives you the power of the best proprietary solution without the need of a certified operator. We will be installing Vyatta in the coming months.
• Desktop with Ubuntu, Open Office, Mozilla, and AVG. This combination will reduce your costs and keep the productivity suite your business needs for the day to day operations on a smaller foot print.
• Web server with Ubuntu, Tomcat, Apache, Postgres, and PHP. This can provide you with a scalable server stack that can handle Java, PHP, HTML, and Databases.
• E-mail Server and Spam Filtering with Postfix and Spam Assassin. This combination can give your business a professional e-mail server without the on-going costs with Spam filtering that we've found can catch about 70% of the garbage.
• Phone, PBX, and VOIP with Asterisk, the Open Source Phone system that can be integrated with your existing phone lines or move your business to Voice Over IP (VOIP). We are currently moving to Asterisk and VOIP, and outlooking a real savings.
• Anti-Virus with Grisoft's AVG, an anti-virus software that better protects your computer with deeper scans and uses less of your CPU to run itself.

If you are technical you can download these programs and run them on your own Linux server.
